This new type of criminal activity has hit the headlines recently, with investigative reporters finding it all too easy to 'steal' the identities of deceased people and apply for loans and credit cards in their names.

Furthermore, the latest figures from the UK's Fraud Prevention Service, CIFAS, reveal an 80% increase in fraud by criminals impersonating the deceased. The CIFAS figures show that crooks will stop at nothing in their attempts to steal money, whatever the distress caused to bereaved families.

There are many ways in which information that you thought was personal can fall into the hands of fraudsters. Cases have been recorded whereby mail individually addressed to the deceased has been intercepted and stolen, for example, by the new occupier of the deceased's former address. The personal details of the deceased therein can then be used to make fraudulent loan or credit applications, resulting in huge debts being amassed in their name.

If you are worried that a fraud may already have been committed in the name of a deceased relative or partner, please go to www.cifas.org.uk for further information.
